RESTORING YOUR VOICE:

THE MYTH OF KASSANDRA

Kassandra was the daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba. She was a princess of Troy and priestess of Apollo. Deeply pious, she took a vow of celibacy and devoted her life to service and worship. Beautiful beyond compare, she eventually caught the roaming eye of the god Apollo who became infatuated with her. She agreed to have sex with him, and in exchange, Apollo bestowed upon her one of his most sacred of gifts—prophecy. But once she received it, she withdrew her promise and refused to lie again with him. Angered by her refusal, Apollo turned his gift into a curse: for the remainder of her life, and unto all her descendants, there would be prophecy without heed.

Kassandra is famous for foretelling and warning of the Trojan War, but no one would believe her and the city of Troy was overtaken. In the traditional myth, she was driven mad with the burden of her prophecies and wandered throughout the land, frantic and raving.

While Kassandra is not technically a goddess, she is a powerful archetype for women, as we have historically been silenced by society’s patriarchal rules, and often by our own parents—just as Kassandra was by her father. Until the time when marriages were no longer arranged in most parts of the world, a woman had no voice in the matters of her own life.

Kassandra represents the madness that comes from the suppression of our inner voice, both in our own lives, and in the world. She symbolizes the unheeded intuition of women, and the silenced voice of The Divine Feminine. The wish of The Goddess is for balance to be in the world, and for us to live out the vision of harmony that She holds for us. For this to happen, we must trust our intuition and allow our voices to be heard.
